Maswa Game Reserve lies in Simiyu Region across the Bariadi, Meatu and Itilima districts, on the southern edge of the Serengeti. The name comes from a Sukuma word meaning grasses.
Open plains, rolling hills, thickets and granite kopjes are cut by seasonal rivers with permanent waterholes that serve as a dry-season refuge for Serengeti wildlife.
