Moyowosi Game Reserve was established in 1981 by upgrading the Moyowosi Game Controlled Area. It lies in the Kibondo and Kakonko districts of Kigoma Region in western Tanzania and borders Kigosi National Park to the north.
It is named after the Moyowosi River, a large river that flows all year and is hard to cross, and it is the heart of the reserve and its main source of water for wildlife. Together with the Malagarasi River it forms the Malagarasi-Muyovozi Ramsar site, the first Ramsar site declared in Tanzania.
