Selous Game Reserve was set aside in 1922 and gazetted in 1974. It was named after the hunter and early conservationist Captain Frederick Courtney Selous, and received UNESCO World Heritage status in 1982.
In 2019 the northern part of the old reserve, with the best photographic areas, became Nyerere National Park. The remaining Selous Game Reserve covers about 18,000 km² in the Lindi and Coast regions and is still the largest game reserve in Tanzania.
