Overview
The Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic and least crowded trails to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting on the western side of the mountain, it begins in the lush rainforest of the Lemosho Glades, home to unique flora and wildlife. The route gradually ascends through moorlands and alpine deserts, offering breathtaking views of the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, and distant peaks. With more days for acclimatization, it provides one of the highest success rates for reaching Uhuru Peak. Comfort Level

Day 1 - Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
After breakfast at the hotel, you will depart for Lemosho for a scenic, approximately 3-hour drive to Londorossi Park Gate at an elevation of 7,300 ft. Upon arrival, you will complete registration formalities.
Next, you’ll drive to the trailhead to begin your hike to Big Tree Campsite (“Mti Mkubwa”) on the beautiful Shira Plateau, a fantastic area for spotting big game.
At around 11,000 ft elevation, stop for a lunch break, then continue hiking to the campsite. Your arrival time depends on the weather and trail conditions.
During rainy seasons (April to June and December to February), expect muddy paths that may delay arrival between 7:30 and 8:45 PM. In dry weather, you may reach camp as early as 6:30 to 7:00 PM.
You will enjoy a warm dinner and an overnight stay at Big Tree Campsite (“Mti Mkubwa”).

Day 2 - Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 2 Camp
After a hearty breakfast, your trek continues steadily uphill through the lush rainforest and into the heather and moorland zone. As the trees thin out, expansive views begin to open up. The trail leads you across the scenic Shira Ridge and onto the Shira Plateau, one of the most picturesque sections of the climb.
You’ll hike for about 7 to 8 km (5 to 6 hours) today. The landscape becomes more open and rugged, with the majestic Mount Meru often visible behind you on a clear day. You’ll arrive at Shira 2 Camp, set on a flat area with amazing views across the plateau and toward the summit of Kibo.

Day 3 - Shira 2 to Barranco Camp
You will embark on today’s trek heading toward the iconic Lava Tower, a massive volcanic formation standing at 4,630 m (15,190 ft). This part of the climb, though challenging due to the high elevation, is crucial for acclimatization and offers breathtaking views of the Western Breach and Breach Wall.
After reaching Lava Tower and pausing for lunch and rest, you’ll descend to the scenic Barranco Camp nestled in a valley below the imposing Barranco Wall. This descent helps your body adapt better to the altitude - “climb high, sleep low” - a golden rule for acclimatization.
Expect dramatic shifts in landscape, from alpine desert to lush valleys dotted with giant groundsel and lobelias.

Day 4 - Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Today, you will embark on the challenging but rewarding climb up the Barranco Wall, often referred to as the "Breakfast Wall". Though steep, the climb is non-technical and offers some of the most dramatic views of the route.
After successfully conquering the wall, the trail winds through a series of ridges and valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp. This relatively short day of trekking plays a key role in your acclimatization, giving your body a chance to adjust to the altitude before the summit attempt.
Enjoy a hot meal, some rest, and soak in the views of Mawenzi Peak in the distance.

Day 5 - Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
You will embark on today’s trek toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before your summit attempt. Situated at an elevation of 15,200 ft (4,630 m), Barafu marks the critical point for climbers to rest and acclimatize before heading to the summit.
The trek is comparatively short but important, giving you time to relax, hydrate, and prepare both physically and mentally. Upon arrival, you’ll have lunch, a detailed summit briefing with your guide, and time to organize your gear for the long night ahead.

Day 6 - Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Today is summit day, the most challenging and rewarding part of your Kilimanjaro adventure. You’ll begin your ascent around midnight, climbing in the dark over loose scree and possibly snow. After 6 to 7 hours of steady climbing, you’ll reach Uhuru Peak at 19,341 ft (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa, just in time to witness a spectacular sunrise (weather permitting).
Take time for photos and to savor your achievement before beginning your descent. You’ll return to Barafu Camp for a short rest and lunch, then continue your descent to Mweka Camp at 10,000 ft (3,050 m) for your final night on the mountain.
