Akagera National Park, located in the eastern part of Rwanda along the border with Tanzania, is the country’s largest protected wetland and the last remaining savannah ecosystem in Rwanda. Covering approximately 1,122 square kilometers, the park is named after the Kagera River, which feeds its many lakes, including Lake Ihema. It is a conservation success story, having recovered from severe poaching and habitat destruction to become a thriving haven for wildlife.
The park is managed by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) in partnership with African Parks, a non-profit conservation organization. Today, it is home to the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, and leopard) and offers stunning landscapes ranging from savannah plains and wetlands to rolling hills and dense woodlands.
