Lukwika-Lumesule lies in the remote country west and south-west of Masasi, in Nanyumbu District. It was upgraded from a game controlled area to a game reserve in 1996 and covers about 444 km².
The Ruvuma River separates it from Mozambique’s Niassa Reserve, and animals cross the river. Together they form part of one of Africa’s largest trans-boundary ecosystems (about 154,000 km²), and the Selous-Niassa wildlife corridor carries elephant, buffalo, zebra and wildebeest between the two countries.
