When to Visit
Dry Season (May to October): This is the best time for wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources, and the vegetation is sparse, making it easier to spot predators. The cooler temperatures also make game drives more comfortable.
Wet Season (November to April): The landscape is lush and green, and birdlife is at its peak due to the arrival of migratory species. However, wildlife viewing can be more challenging as animals are more dispersed.

Get There
  Okonjima is accessible by both road and air:   By Road: From Windhoek: Approx. 225 km (2.5 to 3 hours' drive) via the B1 highway. From Etosha National Park: Approx. 200 km (2.5 hours' drive) south via Otjiwarongo. The last stretch to the reserve is a gravel road, suitable for standard vehicles.   By Air: Okonjima has a private airstrip for chartered flights. The nearest commercial airport is Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek.

Birds

 

Birdwatching at Okonjima is a treat for enthusiasts, with over 250 recorded species. Some of the notable bird species include:

 

  • Raptors: Martial eagle, African hawk-eagle, and the pale chanting goshawk.
  • Ground Birds: Helmeted guineafowl, red-billed spurfowl, and Hartlaub’s spurfowl.
  • Waterbirds: African jacana, blacksmith lapwing, and Egyptian goose near water sources.
  • Colorful Species: Lilac-breasted roller, crimson-breasted shrike, and Rosy-faced lovebird.
