Swagaswaga Game Reserve was gazetted in 1997 and lies in the Chemba and Kondoa districts of Dodoma Region, with a small part in Singida Region; its north borders Hanang in Manyara Region.
The name goes back to a caravan route that Arab traders and later Somali livestock traders used to reach the coast; the guides called "swaga swaga" to move the animals on. Traces of the route can still be seen in the north.
