What Makes This Safari Stand Out

The 6 Days Marangu Route is one of the most popular and accessible ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a well-paced itinerary with comfortable hut accommodation throughout the trek. Often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” this trail is ideal for climbers who prefer a structured path with gradual ascents and a less rugged camping experience. Day By Day

6 Day Itinerary

Day 1 Marangu Gate (1,870m) → Mandara Hut (2,720m) Main Destination: Kilimanjaro National Park

Hiking time: 4–5 hours

Distance: ~8 km

Altitude gain: +850m

Acclimatization: Gentle introduction

After breakfast, you drive to Marangu Gate for registration before starting your trek. The trail passes through lush rainforest, filled with birdlife and monkeys. The gradual ascent allows your body to begin adapting to altitude.

By afternoon, you arrive at Mandara Hut. If energy allows, you can take a short walk to Maundi Crater for scenic views and light acclimatization.

Day 2 Mandara Hut (2,720m) → Horombo Hut (3,720m) Main Destination: Kilimanjaro National Park

Hiking time: 6–7 hours

Distance: ~12 km

Altitude gain: +1,000m

Acclimatization: Steady ascent

Leaving the forest behind, you enter the moorland zone with expansive views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The trail becomes more exposed, and temperatures begin to drop.

This is a long day with a significant altitude gain, so maintaining a slow, steady pace is crucial. Upon arrival at Horombo Hut, you may start to feel mild altitude effects, which is normal.

Day 3 Horombo Hut (3,720m) → Acclimatization Day Main Destination: Kilimanjaro National Park

Hiking time: 3–4 hours (optional hike)

Distance: ~5 km

Altitude gain: +200–300m

Acclimatization: Critical day

You spend an extra day at Horombo Hut to improve acclimatization. An optional hike toward Zebra Rocks or Mawenzi Ridge helps your body adapt by gaining altitude and then returning to sleep lower.

This “climb high, sleep low” strategy significantly increases your chances of reaching the summit. The rest of the day is spent relaxing, hydrating, and preparing for the higher camps ahead.

Day 4 Horombo Hut (3,720m) → Kibo Hut (4,700m) Main Destination: Kilimanjaro National Park

Hiking time: 5–6 hours

Distance: ~10 km

Altitude gain: +980m

Acclimatization: Transition to high altitude

You trek across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, entering an alpine desert environment. The landscape is dry and barren, and the altitude makes walking more challenging.

You arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon, rest, and prepare for the summit attempt. An early dinner is followed by a few hours of sleep before the midnight climb begins.

Day 5 Kibo Hut (4,700m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Horombo Hut (3,720m) Main Destination: Kilimanjaro National Park

Hiking time: 10–13 hours

Distance: ~22 km

Altitude gain: +1,195m up, then -2,175m down

Acclimatization: Summit push

The summit attempt begins around midnight in cold and dark conditions. The climb is steep and demanding, but reaching Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa—is incredibly rewarding.

After celebrating at the summit, you descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue to Horombo Hut. This is the longest and most physically demanding day of the trek.
