5-Day Best of Nyerere and Mikumi with Rufiji Boat Safari

Your driver-guide collects you early from your hotel or the airport in Dar es Salaam. The road runs south through coastal villages and farmland to Nyerere National Park, the largest national park in Tanzania and part of the former Selous Game Reserve. After check-in you set out on an afternoon game drive, looking for elephants, giraffes, buffalo and impala in the woodland, and hippos and crocodiles near the water. Dinner and overnight at your camp.

Start the morning with a guided boat safari on the lakes and channels of the Rufiji River. From the water you get close views of hippo pods, crocodiles basking on the sandbanks and waterbirds such as herons, storks and kingfishers. Elephants and other animals often come down to drink along the banks. Return to camp for lunch, then head out on an afternoon game drive on land. Dinner and overnight at your camp.

Leave Nyerere after breakfast and drive north to Morogoro, a green farming town at the foot of the Uluguru Mountains, where you stop for lunch. Continue west to Mikumi National Park and head out on an afternoon game drive on arrival, looking for elephants, giraffes, zebras and buffalo on the Mkata floodplain. Dinner and overnight at your camp in Mikumi.

Spend the day exploring Mikumi National Park with morning and afternoon game drives. The Mkata floodplain gives wide, open views, so wildlife is often easy to spot. Your guide searches for lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, wildebeest and impala, and stops at the hippo pools where hippos and crocodiles share the water. Return to camp for lunch and a rest in the heat of the day, then go out again for the softer afternoon light. Dinner and overnight at your camp.

Enjoy an early breakfast and, time permitting, a short final game drive while the animals are active. Then leave Mikumi and drive east through Morogoro back to Dar es Salaam. You arrive in the afternoon, and your driver-guide drops you at your hotel or at the airport for your onward journey. We recommend booking onward flights for the evening or the next day to allow for traffic on the road into the city.
