5-Day Mikumi and Ruaha Safari By SGR Train from Dar

Start with an early transfer to the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station in Dar es Salaam and take the electric train west to Morogoro, a journey of around two hours through farmland and small towns. Your driver-guide meets you at Morogoro station for the road transfer of about 90 minutes to Mikumi National Park. After lunch and check-in you set out on an afternoon game drive across the Mkata floodplain, looking for elephants, giraffes, zebras and buffalo. Dinner and overnight at your camp.

After an early game drive in Mikumi, continue west through the Kitonga Gorge and the highland town of Iringa to Ruaha National Park. It is a long drive through changing scenery, from farmland to hills and baobab country. You arrive in the afternoon and, time permitting, go on a short game drive along the Great Ruaha River before dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Spend the day exploring Ruaha National Park, one of the largest and wildest parks in Tanzania. Morning and afternoon game drives take you through river valleys, open woodland and plains dotted with baobab trees. Your guide searches for large elephant herds, lions, leopards and both greater and lesser kudu. Return to the lodge for lunch and a rest in the heat of the day, then go out again in the afternoon light. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Enjoy a final morning game drive in Ruaha, then begin the journey back east. You drive through Iringa and the Kitonga Gorge to Mikumi, where you spend the night to break the long road trip. On the way, keep an eye out for baboons and elephants along the highway where it crosses Mikumi National Park. Dinner and overnight at your camp in Mikumi.

After breakfast you enjoy a short final activity in the Mikumi area, then your driver-guide takes you back to Morogoro station for the SGR electric train to Dar es Salaam. The train ride takes around two hours, and you arrive in the city in the evening. On arrival you are dropped at your hotel or the airport.
