Planning basics: when to go and how long to stay

A short guide to choosing the season and the number of days, so your request is realistic.

You do not need a finished plan to ask for a quote, but a few basics help. Operators can refine the rest with you.

When to go

  • The dry season usually gives the easiest game viewing because animals gather near water and the grass is shorter.
  • The green season is quieter and often cheaper, with lush scenery and many young animals, but some roads and camps are harder to reach.
  • Big events such as wildebeest migration movements depend on the year, so ask your operator what is likely for your dates.

How long to stay

  • 3 to 4 days is enough for a first taste of one area.
  • 5 to 7 days lets you combine two or three parks without rushing.
  • 8 days or more suits multi-country trips or a beach stay at the end.
TipFewer places with more time in each is almost always better than a long list of one-night stops. Long drives eat into your game viewing.
